BarCampRochester

Yesterday I and the rest of the developers in our office attended a conference here in town called BarCampRochester. Well, actually it's called an "un-conference", meaning it tries really hard not to be just another boring, stogy conference—and it wasn't. For a full explanation of what BarCamps are, check out the BarCamp Web site. My quick explanation is: a bunch of people come together at a predetermined time and place, and with the help of a facilitator or two, they get to know each other and find out the interesting knowledge that each person has to offer.

Then anyone who wants, to can give a presentation by simply writing down a topic and picking a time to present. Some people had come with fully prepared presentations, and others who seemed to just get into the spirit of the event, just tried winging it. I gave it a try and really winged it—I had absolutely nothing prepared—but everyone in the audience was very supportive.

It was a great time, I meet some very talented people in our area, and I learned a lot from the presentations I heard. Here is a very short list of what I heard.

  • A quick synopsis of test driven development by Bob Aman
  • Insight into launching a new app (billQ) by the folks as SeenCreative
  • A quick summary of some of the hottest Web apps available today by Erica O'Grady
  • An intro into Web accessibility and why it's important by Justin Thorp
  • An many more...sorry to anyone I left off, I didn't catch everyone's names.

I would highly recommend attending a BarCamp in your area if you would like to learn quite a bit, to meet some like minded people in your area, for an opportunity to share your knowledge, or for an chance to try presenting in front of a group of very friendly and helpful people. Next time, I am going prepared! Oh, and a special thanks to the people who helped organize the whole event. Erica O'Grady and Justin Thorp.
